How to Trade Indices?

An index is a weighted basket. Trading it moves your exposure with the market as a whole rather than with any single company's results.

Cash indices roll continuously and carry a daily financing charge. Futures indices expire; the contract you are in and its expiry date are shown on the instrument, so nothing is rolled without you knowing.

Index point
Point: the smallest quoted move. Its cash value follows the contract size.
Constituent
Constituent: one company in the basket, weighted by its share of the index.

Margined products can lose more than the amount you put in. Read the Risk Disclosure before you trade.

Common Questions

Short answers on how indices with AVEXA Markets.

Cash index or futures index?

Cash rolls indefinitely and charges daily financing. Futures expire on a stated date and carry no overnight charge. Choose by how long you intend to hold.

How are dividends handled?

On a cash index the weighted dividend of the constituents is adjusted on the position at the ex-date, credited to longs and debited from shorts.

What happens at expiry?

A dated contract settles at the published settlement price. It is not rolled for you, so close or replace it before the stated time.

Is the quote the same as the exchange print?

It tracks it closely but is derived from the futures market, so it can differ during exchange auctions and outside cash hours.
